Trail Closure Notice: Sifto Loop

The Sifto Loop Trail will be closed on Monday, December 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Please note that many dead ash trees along the Sifto Loop Trail will be removed during this period. These trees pose a safety hazard and are obstructing the Maitland Trail Association's Buckthorn remediation efforts, which aim to restore native species on the North Trail.

In collaboration with Compass Minerals, the MTA is actively contributing to this essential project. There will be multiple hazardous tree removals, and heavy equipment will be in use along the trail.

For everyone’s safety, access to the trail will be prohibited during this period.

About the Sifto Loop Trail:

The 1 km Sifto Loop, beginning at the north end of the Menesetung Bridge, is an easy, scenic, hilly trail that offers rewarding views. From the trail, you'll enjoy an impressive perspective of the Maitland River and Lake Huron, and an encounter with the Old Heritage Red Oak Tree, which is over 200 years old, more than 3 meters (9 feet) wide, and 30 meters (90 feet) high.

At the far end of the trail, you'll notice the expansive entrance to the Sifto Salt Mine, which began production in 1959. Today, this mine is the world’s largest, extracting over 7 million tons of salt annually and descending an impressive 1,800 feet underground. Nearby, two tall white grain elevators mark the area’s industrial heritage.
