Each Spring, the MTA, John Hindmarsh Environmental Trust Fund, and the Maitland Conservation Foundation hold their annual Plant and Compost Sale at the Maitland Woods in Goderich.

Proceeds of the sale go to these local organizations:

Purchase new and interesting plants for your garden, as well as compost to provide much-needed enrichment, plants for all gardens; perennials, sun-loving, shade-tolerant, natives and herbs.

There will also be a limited number of bagged compost available. It often sells out early!

This is also a good opportunity to donate excess plants from your garden. If you have such donations, bring them to the sale site before 10 a.m., or contact us 1-2 days before the event.

At 1:00 in the afternoon, join us for a one-hour guided hike through the beloved Maitland Woods. The hike is suitable for all ages.

What do Caterpillars Eat?

Swallowtail caterpillars have a diverse diet, and can be found munching on a variety of different plants such as those in the parsley family, carrots, dill, fennel, Queen Anne's Lace, celery, and cumin. Not only do they consume the leaves of these plants, but also the flowers. The adult female butterfly is an expert at finding the perfect host plant to lay her eggs in. This is important, because if she chooses the wrong plant, the caterpillars will not eat, and they will die.
