Trail Talk 294 January 10th 2024

The Falls on Jan 1st

There was a great turn out for the Maitland Trail’s hike on New Year’s Day when 26 of us enjoyed the unseasonable weather with just a light dusting of snow in places and an ice free river.

Golden Eye on the Maitland river

The first Tuesday Tromp of the year also saw a good turnout of 19 people.  Unfortunately  there has not been a good turnout of birds recently, apart from Canada Geese which seem to be thriving about 150 of which I saw on the pond on Base line on the way to Auburn.  They are also a common sight from the Menesetung bridge, which is where I saw a small flock of about 20 goldeneyes enjoying the ice free, though rather murky, Maitland river.

Tuesday Trompers in the Robertson Tract

Looking back on 2023  the Tuesday Trompers  averaged 16 hikers out.   The lowest turnout was 4 and highest of 24 with 63 people coming out at least once. The “Uneven” hikers averaged just 8 hikers out with a low of 3 and a high of 16, with 30 hikers coming out at least once.  We hiked on most of the Maitland Trail as well as 15 other local hiking trails.
