Please be advised that the Maitland Trail is now closed where it meets Sharpe’s Creek Line from the east. This closure is due to gravel extraction work by The Miller Group, which has begun operating heavy equipment in the area.

The good news: we’re excited to announce a new re-route of the Maitland Trail featuring over 3 km of scenic new trail and the reopening of a section west of Sharpe’s Creek Line that has been closed for more than 30 years!

New Re-Route Details

Starting from the northeast at the River Line access, the trail remains unchanged until near its former exit at Sharpe’s Creek Line. At that point, the new route unfolds as follows:

  • Instead of continuing west to Sharpe’s Creek Line, the trail:

    • Turns south along a treeline for approx. 200 meters

    • Enters a mature hardwood forest

    • (Follow the white blazes through the forest)

  • After exiting the forest, the trail continues:

    • South for several hundred meters along another treeline

    • Then turns west and exits at Sharpe’s Creek Line

  • From there:

    • Walk north along Sharpe’s Creek Line until you have gone approx. 40 meters north of Fern Hurst Glen Road

    • Watch for white blazes on the west side leading back into a forested area

  • The trail then:

    • Continues west, running parallel to Fern Hurst Glen Road

    • Gradually turns north, following a scenic ridge that overlooks the Maitland River Valley

    • At the northern end of the re-route, it turns east through a cedar forest

    • Then heads north, crossing a small stream

    • Climbs a short series of switchbacks before rejoining the existing Maitland Trail near Bishop’s Road
