** NOTE: Trail organizations make it a priority to maximize their risk management procedures. These range from the initial planning and construction of their trails, and the upkeep of these trails once they are created, to the planning and carrying out of their events. We know that it is important that the hike leaders know how many participants are expected for an event, so that they can plan properly (i.e. having two hike leaders on hand if the group is large). So – in most cases – we aren’t providing the starting point or car shuttle arrangements. This means you will have to phone the contact person to get this information (leave your name and phone number if they are out – they will phone back). Remember that our hike leaders are all volunteers, people who are willing to spend their free time in order to provide safe, pleasant outdoor experiences for both those who live in our community and visitors.

Also, please realize that a hike leader does not have to include everyone who shows up. If someone arrives and either has a physical problem that would make their participation unsafe, or is not properly prepared for the nature of the excursion (i.e. wearing sandals for a rugged trail; having no food or water for a day trip; not properly dressed for the weather) they can be asked to come to a later event instead, when they have been able to obtain the appropriate equipment.

Terrain Rating:
Level 1- Well defined trails, gentle inclines. Hiking boots not required, but trails may be wet, good for beginners.
Level 2- Generally on trail. May be hilly, light bushwhacking, some rough spots or obstacles. Boots recommended.
Level 3- Rough terrain. One or more of extensive bushwhacking, steep sections, long climbs and descents, beaver dams or other obstacles, rock scrambling. Boots required. Fit, experienced hikers only. Long pants & sleeves recommended.
Speeds: Leisurely – 2-3 km/hr., Moderate – 3-4 km/hr., Brisk – 5 km/hr or more.

Jane's Walk on the Square
Celebrate spring by joining us for a healthy walk around the Goderich Square. Expect to be entertained and inspired as local architects, artists and community leaders walk us through the past, present and future of the Goderich Square. This is a great time to get active and share your experiences in the Square with your neighbours. Were plans for Guelph and Goderich really switched? What were some of the best and worst moments in the history of the Square? What does the future hold for a thriving, walkable downtown Goderich? Jane's Walk on the Square will get you thinking about all this and more. 4-6pm: Join us for cake after the walk at Joe Friday's to celebrate the birthday of the late, great Jane Jacobs.
Jane's Walk is a celebration of people and communities taking place all around the world on the first weekend of May, to coincide with author Jane Jacobs' birthday on May 4. Through the simple act of walking together and discussing how neighbourhoods really work, Jane Jacobs believed people could help to build strong, resourceful communities.
Look for posters closer to the date.

Plant & Compost sale, and afternoon walk at the Maitland Woods
This annual joint project of the Maitland Conservation Foundation, the John Hindmarsh Environmental Trust Fund and the Maitland Trail Association will be holding its 7th annual Spring Hike and Plant and Compost sale in the lovely Maitland Woods, and adjacent parking lot of the Columbus Hall on Parsons Court, at the south end of Goderich (Parson’s Court opens off the east end of Suncoast Drive). Proceeds of the sale go to the Maitland Conservation Foundation (which includes the John Hindmarsh Environmental Trust Fund) and helps fund important educational and environmental projects such as the Wawanosh Nature Centre (providing excellent nature programs to area schools), the Yellow Fish Road Storm Drain Program, and Dune Grass Replanting project. It has also provided significant funding to the MTA for signage. This is a great opportunity to donate your excess plants to a very worthy cause (that morning before 10, or to Wendy or Sue a day or two before), and to pick up some interesting new plants and bags of compost. Both will enrich your own garden! Plant sale will go ahead, rain or shine. At 1:00 pm and 1:30 pm, leisurely, guided afternoon hikes (suitable for all ages) will be setting out, during which interesting natural features will be seen. There will be a prize draw for the hikers.

Seniors Games Walking Event
Ontario's Senior Games are held annually in early summer. This year the Walking Event will again be held in Goderich, on the Tiger Dunlop Trail. Walkers start from the 1.5 km post (just beyond the north side of the Menesetung Bridge)walk to the 3 km post and then back again, for the required total of 3 km. A prediction walk means you predict how long it will take you to walk the distance. The person who comes closest to his/her prediction is the winner --? this makes it fair for all ages and abilities. (Of course, no one is allowed to carry/wear a watch or timing device when taking part!) Men and women 55 years and older are eligible for the 3 km route, and there is a 1 km option for walkers over 70 --? if they wish a shorter route. Let’s have a large group of Goderich participants involved this year. Give it a try --? better still, convince your partner and friends to go along and make it a really special outing. Call Wendy Hoernig if interested in participating, for more information. *** Also, at least 8 volunteers are needed to help run this event. If you are available, but don’t want to be one of our local participants, we would welcome your help. RAIN DATE: May 17th, 10 am.
